Harper's Lawsuit Threatens Blogsphere
03.15.08 (1:49 pm)   [edit]
MPs can not be sued for what they say in the House, but MPs can not use this privilege to insulate themselves against libel by simply quoting what they said in the House.  Lawmakers did not want any bootstrapping.  That is why when Ken Dryden read out what he said in the House word for word it actually meant something. News organizations, on the other hand, are free to quote what was said in the House without fear of libel. Where this relates back to the blogsephere is the Liberals are asserting that the two articles in question are “news” articles and as such protected from libel and Harper is asserting just the opposite. If judge concludes that these articles, even though they bare a healthy family resemblance to any news article out there on the subject, are not news, then it is but a hop skip and jump to saying that any blogger who happens to quote Ignatieff's words is also open to libel.
If the Liberals where smart they would take aim at just such a sharp distinction and encourage people to quote the offending passages on face book and on their blogs and anywhere they can think of. A false distinction between the news media and everyone else can only damage freedom of speech. Protection from libel must apply to all who quote Hansard.

Even in the blogosphere you are not allowed to lie and accuse someone of a criminal act. That is what Harper is suing the Liberal Party for. What I find so amazing is how easily the Liberals dump any sense of fairness, ethics and justice when someone in opposition to them wants to exercise their rights. This is the exact reason I dislike the Liberals and all they stand for. They refuse to acknowledge, support or protect the rights of people they dislake. In fact, on a daily basis they strive to remove rights and freedoms from people who disagree with them. A truly sick philosophy.

Ron the substance of my post went completly over your head.

Anyway Ronny it time to get off your high horse and acknowledge the facts. I know you as conservative have a problem with truth, research, science and honest debate and love to celebrate your own ignorance, but really you must make an effort. It is for your own good. Remember these:

1) "The NDP Caucus Supports Child Pornography?"

2) "Paul Martin Supports Child Pornography?”

3) "Today, Martin says he's against child pornography. But his voting record proves
otherwise,"

4) Stephen Harper: “Any country with Canada’s insecure smugness and resentment can be dangerous.”

5) "Canada appears content to become a second-tier socialistic country, boasting ever more loudly about its economy and social services to mask its second-rate status"

6) Stephen Harper: “Whether Canada ends up as one national government or two national governments or several national governments, or some other kind of arrangement is, quite frankly, secondary in my opinion."

7) Stephen Harper: “Canada is a Northern Welfare state in the worst sense of the term, and very proud of it.”

8) Stephen Harper: “I delivered [speeches] everywhere I went … about the spirit of defeatism in the country”

9) Stephen Harper: “west of Winnipeg the ridings the Liberals hold are dominated by people who are either recent Asian immigrants or recent migrants from eastern Canada: people who live in ghettoes and who are not integrated into western Canadian society.”

There are more, but I think even you get the point. That said let me know if it has not sunk and I gladly provide more.
