Kinsella and Cherniak
08.22.06 (10:41 pm)   [edit]
I will not defend Hubert, but Kinsella’s and Cherniak’s post was hardly, how should I put this, measured. Jason, it was also politically unwise. When of your own makes a gaffe, it is not politically wise to draw a big circle around it, proclaim yourself the champion of all that is good and talk about the issue ad nauseum in the hopes of winning the civil war. Such a strategy is positively Martinesque and will hurt the party. If Kinsella and Cherniak keep this up, Hubert will be signing a book deal and will the subject of a TV movie soon. They have already turned a 19 year old toiling away in obscurity into a figure the media is taking interest in. There is something to be said about not making a situation worse by overreacting. That reminds me of what I said more than a month ago. “The Afghan Arabs, including Al Qaeda, were an outgrowth of the Soviet Afghan war, Al Qaeda in Iraq, the Iraq war, Hezbollah is a byproduct of Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon and finally Hamas is byproduct of first Palestinian uprising. Given this, it is bizarre that anyone would claim that recent Israeli actions will not strengthen Hezbollah’s base of support and will instead change the rules of the game as it where. Hezbollah biggest opponent is not Israel. Israel is its life blood. The source of its strength is its being one of the only organizations within the Arab world cable of standing up to Israel militarily. The biggest threats to Hezbollah are Lebanon’s economic development and continued democratization.”

Fundamentalist Hamas was funded and nourished by Israel to counter the popularity of the secular PLO.

Israel reaps what it sows. This latest levelling of Lebanon, the friendliest among her neighbours (or was), will have repercusions.
