posted by: therealspartacus007 (reply) post date: 05.24.04 (6:15 pm) Until we get rid of sales, property and "sin" taxes, as well as the regressive income tax and Social Security, the government will continue to steal from the Poor and give to the Lobbyists. posted by: koby (reply) post date: 05.24.04 (9:31 pm) I have never been much a Charles Taylor fan, but when I come across a Libertarian, I can not help think of his revisiting of Berlin’s essay on positive and negative freedom. Taylor I was right about negative freedom (that is freedom from). It means nothing if you do not have ability to act on that freedom (positive freedom). Americans have more negative freedom than pretty much any of Westerner and if you had your way they would have even more. The problem is that they also have less positive freedom from than pretty much anyone else and increasing swaths of the population find themselves enslaved to circumstance. To cite a quite but telling example, Americans have less vacation time, spend longer at work and it spend longer going to and from work than anyone – and that now includes the Japanese. The average French person works 37 hours a week and has 9 weeks of vacation while your average American works 50 hours a week and has 2 weeks of vacation time. Which do you think has more “free” time? |
